Jio adds the highest number of new users in May; images and specifications of its 4G feature phone leaked
Reliance Jio has disrupted the entire telecom sector in India with its 4G internet data and free voice calls give away. From the past few months, Jio is making it to the top of the list when it comes to the numbers and parameters. The telecom giant has yet again topped the charts by bagging 4.7 million new customers in May which is the highest amongst all the other telecom companies in India.
According to the data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the total of telecom subscribers in India including both wired and wireless increased from 1198.9 million at the end of April 2017 to 1204.98 million at the end of May 2017. Out of this, Reliance Jio counted the most number of new users with 4.78 million additions. Followed by Jio was Bharti Airtel which added a total number of 2.09 million new users in the month of May. The state-owned BSNL stood at the 3rd position with 1.35 million new subscribers while Vodafone and Idea were on the 4th and 5th place with 1.3 million and 0.19 million new subscribers respectively.
TRAI also mentions further that, it has received over 5.3 million Mobile Number Portability requests in May 2017, up from the 4.96 million it received in April 2017. “With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 277.72 million at the end of Apr-17 to 283.09 million at the end of May-17, since the implementation of MNP” adds the report from TRAI.
Meanwhile, Apart from bagging highest number of customers, Relaince Jio is all set to launch its Rs. 500 4G feature phone in India. Recently it was reported that Jio could officially launch its 4G feature phone on 21st July at Reliance Industries’ annual general meeting. There is yet another report now which reveals the specifications of the 4G feature phone along with the leaked images.
According to a report of TechPP, the feature phone will be launched under the Lyf brand which also sells a few other smartphones from Jio. The 4G feature phone is speculated to sport a 2.4-inch colour display, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB of internal storage, up to 128 GB micro SD card support. It holds a 2 megapixel rear camera, and VGA front camera. the feature phone packs a 2,000 mAh battery with Dual sim support, Bluetooth 4.1 + LE, FM radio and video calling.
The leaked images show the device to be powered by a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor but its maker is still unknown. Although Qualcomm recently announced its Snapdragon 205 platform specially for 4G VoLTE phones but it is expected that the processor will be made by Spreadtrum.
The phone is said to be running on ‘KAI OS’, a customised version of the HTML5-based Firefox OS. It will reportedly have an app store named ‘KaiOS Plus’. It will also have an integrated voice assistant with support for Indian languages. Apart from this, a few other reports also claim that the feature phone will come with Wifi-tethering too.
