Xiaomi, after a long wait, has launched the successors to its popular Redmi Note 4, as the Redmi Note 5 and the more powerful Redmi Note 5 Pro. When compared to the Redmi Note 5, the Redmi Note 5 Pro packs in dual rear cameras, big selfie camera and a better processor. Let’s get into the details of the smartphone starting with its design. The Redmi Note 5 Pro comes in a very well-built premium metal unibody design having narrow bezels and rounded edges on the display, due to which the front of the phone looks beautiful. On the rear, there is tapered metal finish with curved edges, which makes it comfortable to hold and use. However, the highlight of the back of the phone is the dual camera unit which is designed exactly like the iPhone X, it looks beautiful and gives the phone a special look. In all, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is a well designed beautiful smartphone.
It sports a big 5.99 inches FHD+ (2160 x 1080 pixels) display with 18:9 aspect ratio and 403 PPI pixel density. The screen feels modern and the display quality is very good. And unlike the Redmi Note 4, the Redmi Note 5 Pro also comes with Corning Gorilla Glass protection on top of the screen. One of the highlights of the phone is the new Snapdragon 636 processor, which is also making debut with the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The Octa Core processor is clocked at 1.8 GHz and comes with Kyro CPUs which are usually used in the high-end Snapdragon 8xx series flagship processors and are used for the first time in a Snapdragon 6xx series processor. It comes paired with 4 GB or 6 GB LPDDR4X RAM and Adreno 509 GPU. The performance is excellent, be it daily usage or heavy gaming or multitasking, it handles everything very smoothly, it also scores above 1,00,000 in Antutu benchmark, which is great for a budget phone. It also comes with dual graphene sheet which helps to keep temperatures under control.
However, the biggest highlight of the smartphone is its camera department. It packs in a Dual camera setup on the back with a 12 MP primary Sony IMX 486 sensor having 1.25μm, f/2.2 aperture and a 5 MP secondary Samsung sensor with 1.12μm and f/2.0 aperture for bokeh effects and depth capturing. The picture quality is excellent, it clicks very good images in daylight conditions while the low/artificial light pictures are good as well. But the best thing about the pictures is the bokeh effects, the Redmi Note 5 Pro produces images with great bokeh effects which look natural, while identifying the edges well. On the front, there is a big 20 MP Sony IMX 376 sensor with 1.0μm, f/2.2 aperture, Beautify 4.0 and LED flash. The Redmi Note 5 Pro clicks excellent selfies as well and is a true selfie-centric smartphone. Beautify 4.0 is now much more polished and works well to clear blemishes and imperfections from the skin while preserving the natural beauty and enhancing the looks.
Disappointingly, it still runs on Android 7.1.2 Nougat but is expected to get the Android 8.0 Oreo update soon. Xiaomi’s popular MIUI 9 runs on top, it is very beautiful and feature rich. It comes with ever-changing beautiful wallpapers on the lock screen and lots of customisation options. Features such as ‘Second Space’, which is a separate partition on the phone and ‘Dual Apps’ really come in handy. The phone packs a very fast and accurate fingerprint scanner on the back. Xiaomi has also promised Face Recognition Unlock via an OTA update in March, which will be another great addition to the phone.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro supports 4G and VoLTE but uses a hybrid sim tray so, you can use either two sim cards or a sim and a microSD card at one time. It comes with 64 GB eMMC 5.0 flash storage which is expandable up to 128 GB. While adding all these features to the phone, Xiaomi has retained one of its best quality – the big battery. The Redmi Note 5 Pro still packs in a 4,000 mAh Li-Ion battery, and thanks to the battery efficient processor, delivers great battery backup and can last up to 2 days with mixed usage. It comes with a 5V/2A charger and supports Quick Charge 2.0. Despite packing the big battery and big screen, the phone is not too heavy or thick.
