Google, back in 2014 came with the Android One project to provide budget friendly and affordable smartphones running stock Android. After doing well initially, the Android One smartphones couldn’t quite pace up as the budget smartphones from Xiaomi and other smartphone makers started getting popular. While there wasn’t much progress lately, a new report now suggests that Google might team up with Xiaomi to launch the next Android One smartphone.
According to a report on XDA developers, a new smartphone with model no. MDG2 was found listed on POSTEL, an Indonesian certification agency for telecom products. Apart from this, the Android One smartphone was also seen on the RF certification page with the same model number. The smartphone is said to sport the same design and specifications as that of the recently launched Mi 5X from Xiaomi but will run on the Stock Android UI instead of company’s popular MIUI skin.
If the rumours come out to be true, then this new smartphone will be the first in the Android One portfolio to hold a dual camera setup at the rear. The Android One smartphones comply with certain Google’s guideline in terms of quality, software and specifications. However, as known by everyone, Xiaomi itself maintains quite high standards even for its budget smartphones and already offers a lot so, Xiaomi coming with an Android One smartphone will certainly raise the bar higher for Google’s project.
As per the leaks, the smartphone is said to feature a 5.5 inch Full HD display similar to that of the Mi 5X. As of now, there is no official confirmation about the smartphone from Google or from Xiaomi regarding the launch of this Android One smartphone. We can however expect a few more details to pop up in the coming days and, looking at the history of Android One, there is high possibility that smartphone will be launched first in India only.
