Oppo, famous for its selfie-focused smartphones, has launched its latest smartphone Oppo F5, which is yet another selfie-focused smartphone but this time, the phone packs a lot more. Let’s first start with the design, the highlighting aspect of the Oppo F5 design is its bezel less display with almost no bezels on the side and minimum bezels on the top and bottom. Due to this, the phone looks beautiful and accommodates a big 6 inches screen in the size of a typical 5.5 inches phone. There back is made up of matte finish aluminium, which feels very good in hands. The build quality is sturdy and with 152 grams of weight and 7.2 mm thickness it is well designed. Summing up the design, the Oppo F5 is a beautiful well-designed phone in the mid-range segment.
The 6 inch LTPS IPS screen comes with FHD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels, the screen is taller and comes with 18:9 aspect ratio, a feature which started with flagship phones and is now becoming a trend in the budget segment as well. The display quality is decent but the colors are not very punchy, like you would expect in a phone which highlights its display, however, it is not bad and can’t be considered as a downside/con. The Oppo F5 runs on a 2.5 GHz octa core Mediatek MT6763T Helio P23 processor coupled with 4 GB RAM and Mali-G71 MP2. The performance is good enough for day to day usage and some gaming but there can be some issues with the graphics intensive games as the GPU is not a very powerful one, even the processor cannot be compared for smoothness with the Snapdragon 625, found on most of the phones in this price segment.
Now coming to the strongest zones of the phone – the camera department, the Oppo F5 comes with a 20 MP front camera with F2.0 aperture and 1/2.8” sensor. It is an excellent selfie shooter, the selfies turn out great in day light and it does decent in low light conditions as well. It comes with AI (Artificial Intelligence) powered facial beautification for selfies which does a pretty good job in beautifying your face by smoothening it and hiding all the undesired elements. It also comes with portrait shots for selfies, which adds nice bokeh effect but it still doesn’t perfectly recognize the edges. In all, the Oppo F5 is one of the best selfie shooters in its price. On the rear, there is a 16 MP camera with F1.8 aperture, it is again a good shooter in day light conditions. However, unlike most new phones these days, the Oppo F5 doesn’t come with a dual camera setup.
The Oppo F5 packs in a good fingerprint scanner on the back, but interestingly it also includes ‘Facial unlock’ which scans your face and lets you unlock your phone by simply looking at it. It runs on Android v7.1 Nougat based ColorOS 3.2 which is a very heavily customised Android skin, completely different from stock Android but comes with lots of features and first party apps. It comes with 32 GB of internal storage which is expandable up to 256 GB via microSD card. It is a dual sim phone with dedicated slots. The phone is backed by a non-removable 3200 mAh Li-Ion battery which delivers good battery backup and although the company doesn’t mention the VOOC fast charging, but the phone ships with a 5V, 2A charger which charges it quickly.
