Should You Buy?
Overall, the Xiaomi Redmi Y2 offers, what the Redmi Note 5 and others could not offer at this price – excellent front & rear cameras, which are surely the best this price range has ever seen. It has also got good performance along with a beautiful design and a big display with 18:9 ratio. However, unlike most Xiaomi smartphones, which offer a complete package, it misses out on a FHD+ display, has got a plastic build & comes with a smaller battery than other Xiaomi phones. Still the Redmi Y2 is a good phone, specially if you are a little tight on budget & need good cameras but, of course if you are ready for some compromises.

Xiaomi, willingly or forcefully, has shifted its strategy and is now launching multiple smartphones at the same price point to make sure it keeps up with the competition and has something to offer for all types of users. We say forcefully because, Xiaomi already has the Redmi Note 5 which is an excellent phone and is still considered one of the best for its price, but it doesn’t have dual rear cameras or a big selfie shooter, which has become a big trend and more people are looking towards it.
So, here is the Redmi Y2 with a dual rear camera setup and a big selfie shooter. Good thing is that the Redmi Y2 hasn’t just got the numbers but it has cameras which are fairly powerful. On the back, there is a 12 MP + 5 MP setup which is same as the Redmi Note 5 Pro, a phone which is known for its great cameras and as expected, the Redmi Y2 also is an excellent shooter, a kind of which has been never seen before at this price point before. The daylight performance is excellent and the night and low light image quality is good as well.
It comes with ƒ/2.2 aperture, Beautify 4.0, AI-powered Portrait mode, 1.25-micron pixel size and can record videos up to 1080p with EIS. On the front, there is a 16 MP selfie shooter with ƒ/2.0 aperture, 79.8° wide-angle lens, 4500k LED flash, AI-bokeh effect, Beautify 4.0 and there is also 4 in 1 Pixel binning technique, which allows more light and the pictures come out to be excellent in the night. It captures excellent selfies and there are lots of modes and filters which enhance the selfie experience.
Now, let’s come to the rest of the features of the phone, starting with its design. Unlike most other budget phones, the Xiaomi Redmi Y2 comes with a plastic build which is, of course, less premium than the metal unibody smartphones we are used to seeing at this price point. The build quality, however, is good and the phone feels good in hands with its matte kind of finish. Looks wise, the phone is very similar to the Redmi Note 5 Pro, which means it looks beautiful.
It sports a narrow bezel 5.99 inches screen which has, sadly, just an HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio & 269 ppi pixel density. The display is decent but missing out on a Full HD display is a serious compromise, which you don’t really expect from a Xiaomi smartphone. It is powered by the old, but tried and tested 2.0 GHz Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with 3 GB or 4 GB RAM & Adreno 506 GPU. The performance is good for gaming, multitasking or day to day use, however, we are now seeing much more powerful processors at this price.
The Redmi Y2 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with MIUI 9.5 running on top. Xiaomi’s MIUI is beautiful, optimised, feature rich and one the best ROMs out there. The Redmi Y2 supports dual sim with dedicated slots and comes in either 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage which is expandable up to 256 GB via microSD. It comes with a very fast fingerprint scanner situated on the back and has also got fast face unlock, it also comes with infrared and lets you control your electronic appliances like TV, AC, set-top box and more.
The Redmi Y2 is backed by a non-removable 3080 mAh Li-Po Battery, which is smaller than most other Xiaomi smartphones but due to the power-efficient processor and a low-resolution display, it delivers good battery backup. It comes with a 5V/2A charger.
