Twitter Hacked, 250,000 users affected; latest updates

Twitter Hacked:

Twitter has disclosed on Friday that their network has been attacked by unknown hackers and have successfully gained access to 2,50,000 user accounts. The hackers may have gained access to the usernames, email addresses and other sensitive information.

Twitter has sent emails to affected users, asking them to reset their account passwords.

Twitter posted on its blog, “This attack was not the work of amateurs, and we do not believe it was an isolated incident. The attackers were extremely sophisticated, and we believe other companies and organizations have also been recently similarly attacked. For that reason we felt that it was important to publicize this attack while we still gather information, and we are helping government and federal law enforcement in their effort to find and prosecute these attackers to make the Internet safer for all users.”

This is the latest attack in a string of high-profile security breaches on US technology and media companies. Both the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times have had their sites hacked in the last two weeks and Apple and Mozilla have turned off Java by default in their browsers to minimise the risk.
