After stealing the limelight at MWC 2016 few days ago, Samsung has quickly launched its flagship smartphones, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge in India. The Galaxy S7 is priced at Rs. 48,900, whereas the Galaxy S7 Edge costs Rs. 56,900. The pre-booking for the smartphones have already started on Samsung’s official website and Flipkart, and it will continue till 17th March and the phones will be available to buy from 12:00 AM on 18th March. And all those who pre-order the smartphone between today and 17th March will get a free Samsung Gear VR.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge share almost similar specs, but differ only in terms of display and battery size. The Samsung Galaxy S7 features 5.1 inch Quad HD (2560 X 1440 pixels) Super AMOLED display with a pixel density 577 ppi (pixels per inch). Whereas, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge flaunts a 5.5 inch Quad HD with screen resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, Super AMOLED display with a pixel density 534 ppi, and dual edge screen. Both the smartphone’s display are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The Galaxy S7 is packed with a 3000 mAh battery, while S7 Edge is backed by a larger 3600 mAh battery, both supporting the fast charging and wireless charging features.
The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge will be powered by the company’s own Exynos 8890 octa-core SoC in India which company claims to be 30 % faster than its predecessor, that is coupled with 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM. However, in US, UK and some other regions it has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 processor rather than Exynos 8890 CPU. Both the smartphones, bear a 32 GB of internal storage space, which will be further expandable up to 200 GB via microSD slot cum second sim slot. Both the smartphones will run on TouchWiz UI based upon latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow. They also feature an ‘Always On’ display and a fingerprint sensor integrated into the physical home-button.
Speaking of the cameras, both the flagship phones boast a 12-megapixel ‘Dual Pixel’ rear camera with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), PDAF (Phase detection Autofocus), f/1.7 aperture and LED flash. They also have a 5 megapixel selfie camera with f/1.7 aperture on the front. The smartphones are IP68 certified that means they are dust and water-resistant. Connectivity options on the phones includes 4G, 3G, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC and MST (for Samsung pay) and microUSB 2.0.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 measures 142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9 mm, weighs 152 g, while the Galaxy S7 Edge is sized at 150.9 x 72.6 x 7.7 mm, weighs 157 g. Both the smartphones are offered in Black Onyx, Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium color variants. The smartphones also come with double voice and data offer for Vodafone RED customers for 6 months.
Samsung has also introduced the new Samsung Concierge service that is available inside the My Galaxy app for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. The Concierge service comes with benefits like My Assistant that will let users do Web check-in, set reminders, and other services, Fast Track access at Samsung service centers, and Chat With Samsung customer support that will answer everyday question like “How do I enable GPS?”. Samsung says the Concierge services might be avilable to Galaxy S6 and Note 5 customers sometime later.
