Micromax Dual 5 Review:
Micromax, after a very long gap has launched its new phone in the mid-budget segment. It is an ambitious rather bold move from the Indian manufacturer to compete with the hot selling Chinese manufacturers and some top international manufacturers in this price segment. Let’s see what all it has got. The first thing one must know about the Dual 5 is that it is a re-branded Qiku 360 Q5 which is launched by Qiku in China last year. The phone has exact same design and shares many common features with the Qiku 360 Q5 including the Dual cameras and the security chip which are most highlighted (read the launch article) by the company.
Apart from this, the company has repeatedly said that the buyers can feel proud of holding an excellent ‘Indian’ phone, which feels annoying now as they are selling a completely Chinese phone with only few changes and their branding. More important to know is that the Dual 5 is priced much higher in India when compared to the Qiku 360 Q5 in China. So, on a disappointing note, let’s move ahead with the Dual 5.
It comes with a metal unibody design which has excellent build quality. However, it looks similar to most budget smartphones and has nothing new or unique. It sports a 5.5 inches Full HD AMOLED display which has good quality. It runs on the 1.8 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor which delivers very good performance and handles heavy games pretty well also but, considering the price point and competition, it should have offered atleast the Snapdragon 820. It comes coupled with 4 GB RAM and Adreno 510 GPU. The biggest highlight of the phone are its dual 13 MP rear cameras with Sony IMX 258 sensors, both having a f/1.8 aperture lens. Out of the two, one is a monochrome (black & white) sensor while the other is RGB (color) sensor, when you click a picture, both the sensors work together and produce a combined image which has lots of details and good colors. The dual camera setup also allows for lots of effects like bokeh effect, and shifting of focus points after an image is shot. The picture quality of the rear cameras is good. It also packs a 13 MP front camera with the Sony IMX258 sensor, f/2.0 aperture lens and soft flash, the picture quality is also good here. The camera app also comes with lots of modes for the rear as well as front cameras.
The phone comes with a dedicated chip for storing fingerprints and other sensitive data, it also comes with theft proof feature which automatically locks the phone and self destructs all the data in case someone tries to pull out the sim-card without authentication or tries to hack the phone. On the software front, the phone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow which is a big let down at this price. The UI is again Qiku’s 360 OS with some cosmetic changes from Micromax. It supports Dual Profiles and lets you create two separate partitions in the phone. The phone also has a dedicated physical button called ‘Smart Key’ which can be assigned different functions like clicking pictures, torch, cleaning RAM and more. It is a dual sim phone with 4G and dual sim support. It comes with huge 128 GB internal storage which is expandable upto another 128 GB via microSD card through a hybrid slot. The Dual 5 also includes an IR blaster and USB Type-C port. It is backed by a non-removable Li-Ion 3200 mAh battery which provides decent battery backup and supports pretty quick fast charging.
Overall, the Micromax Dual 5 is a good phone in itself, it packs good cameras and nice overall features with focus on security. However, even if we ignore that it is a re-branded phone, it is very difficult to digest its price. It is highly overpriced phone which certainly fails to deliver the amazing user experiences its competitors offer. So, despite being a good smartphone it is not a very good buy at this price atleast.
